Change

My role/identity has changed many times over my 55 years. Some roles have run concurrent but some have come and gone.
Some changes in my roles have been intentional while some have ended suddenly.
Some changes were my choice.
Some changes were someone else's choice.
Some changes just evolved over time.
Some of my main roles have included daughter, sister, aunt, friend, student, employee, wife, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, neighbor, mama, mommy, deacon's wife, supervisor, teacher, mom, elder's wife, mother-in-law, grandma, and child of God.
The one thing I have strived to do is grow with and in each role throughout my 55 years of life.
I hope I continue to grow and learn.
A change in your role can be hard no matter how it comes about if you allow it.
People see you differently.
People treat you differently.
However, the most important thing I have learned is my real identity is simply in Christ.
He is my constant!
He sees me as I am.
He treats me the same ... as if I were to die for!
He gives me grace and mercy at all times.
Tonight, we ended our book study of The Best Yes in our Ladies' Bible class. This was my third time to go through this book. I have gleaned important lessons each time.
My take away this time was to "let unexpected happenings (changes) point to my strengths and not my weaknesses. Maybe I have been entrusted with these unexpected happenings (changes) and not cursed with them."
This take away is quite a game changer for me.
I have been put in positions for which I did not apply.
However, His timing is always perfect!
Change can cause happiness and sadness.
Either way, my response to the change is what matters.
It's weird how you can actually feel in your chest and your stomach when you are hurt or happy.
I just want to always remember whatever role or identity I have to be so close with God that if I "turn to the right or to the left, my ears will hear: This is the way, walk in it." ~ Isaiah

My reminder ... Embrace change!

Love,

Jan 💖

It's 2026! Happy Day 3 of the New Year! Wow! Today is already the 3rd day of a new year. These years seem to be arriving much faster than before. I know it seems like everyone says that, but time does really fly. I looked over my past blog posts and realized very quickly I have only done one a year for the last few years. There are many reasons why. I am sure life hit some bumps, but I am also positive life got fuller and richer. Every year at this time, I am reminded of two pieces of advice given to me when I was a newlywed living in West Virginia and again when I was a young mom living in central Indiana. Both women were strong mentors to me. These women were amazing Christian examples, but also just two dear friends -- even though they were decades older than me. They shared their life experiences with me (not in a preachy way) just in everyday conversations. Their advice helped me to to choose "what was better." (Like Jesus reminded Martha to do.) As a newlywed, I was...

2024 Year in Review

2024 was an amazing year! [The following blog post was simply written for me] After making it through the longest stretch of the school year: aka Q3, we enjoyed a trip to the East Coast to see our eldest prince and his family over Spring Break. Always such a wonderful time being with them and seeing what life is like for them there. While we were there, we went into "the city" a couple of times to enjoy some tourist attractions. We ate at some of our favorite restaurants. And, we walked the boardwalk along the Long Island Sound. Our first adventure took us to the American Museum of Natural History. It was pouring down the rain that day. The line was super long. Everyone handled the weather like champs and we eventually made our way inside to explore more than 40 halls full of interesting exhibits on four floors. The museum was built in 1869 and contains exhibits for science, nature, and history. And, if I am being honest, many areas felt like we were still in 1869 -- and that...

Moments

Today, my sweet grandson experienced his first snowfall. By “experienced,” I mean he actually watched the snow fall through the window; noticed something new was happening outside; and showed excitement and wonderment as he saw the ground turning all white. He was filled with glee as he watched his puppy dog enjoy the snow for the first time. His sweet mommy allowed him to go outside and experience it first-hand. He was able to walk around in it, feel it on his face, and reach for the flakes, as they fell. I got to “experience” the above moments via technology: videos and photos. These moments warmed my heart. His beautiful blue eyes lit up as he watched the snow, felt it on his face, and tried to touch the flakes with his small mittened-hand. I often forget how wonderful life is through the eyes of a small child. Pure happiness! Life can drain me of my happiness as soon as I open my eyes each day. I awake to an alarm at too-early o’clock every day. My mind...
