The Sweetness of Life

Sweetness definition:  Noun 1. the quality of being pleasant to the mind and/or feelings 2. a generalized term of approval; gratifying Our lives are ever-changing. Our lives are fleeting. Our lives are vapors. However, are our lives sweet? Today is a Saturday. I love Saturdays. My Saturdays have changed and evolved over the last 5+ decades. This day has always been SUPER busy or SUPER relaxed. It has been a day for chores, catching up on everything, errands, sports, laundry, family, sleeping in, cleaning, doing nothing, laughing, helping others, napping, etc. etc. etc. The one thing that hasn’t changed is my Saturdays are never long enough!! We are given 86,400 seconds every day. However, these seem to fly by faster on a Saturday. Today, I made chocolate and biscuits for breakfast. As a child, this was a treat my mom would fix once in a while. The rarity of this treat made it even sweeter. When she fixed it, she made homemade biscuits. Someti...

Seasons

Definition:  Noun 1. A period of the year characterized by weather 2. A time characterized by a particular circumstance or activity I love experiencing the 4 different seasons every year. I love some seasons more than others. I also love the seasons of life. And, some of these seasons, I have loved more than others. In Ecclesiastes, it states: “For everything, there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.” In the last 55 years, I have experienced many seasons: -           Daughter -           Sister -           Friend -           Student -           Aunt -           Christian -           Employee -     ...

Invisibility

Definition: (noun) inability to be seen In September, I led a discussion in a ladies’ Bible class on “What Matters Most …” We focused on scripture from Philippians. I learned so much while preparing that lesson and presenting it to those who attended that evening. As I have been dealing with health issues over the last few weeks, this lesson has continued to return to my thoughts. My health issues are invisible. When someone looks at me, they do not see the physical pain I am in on a daily basis. However, when I look at someone else, I can’t see their pain either. We all have pain: physical, mental, social, emotional … and it is all invisible. So, as I have tried to rest and recuperate over the last few days, I have spent time in prayer and pondered the thoughts of that lesson: desires, dilemmas, dedication, and decisions. I have reminded myself to change my internal dialogue from “why is this happening to me?” to “what can I learn from this?” I have to be intentional with...

Encouragement

I am a Reading and Language Arts teacher.  I love everything about this work except the non-stop testing of students. I would so love to just encourage them in their love of reading and then their writing abilities would follow. Along the way, I would love to, and could easily, teach them the fine art of reading and writing. Reading is the most fundamental skill we learn but one of the most important. Reading is necessary to function in our world. We need to read directions, applications, medical information, etc. Reading is necessary for basic survival. Unfortunately, many students arrive at Room 106 woefully behind in this skill, through no fault of their own in many cases. Reading is a way to learn new things, to explore new ideas, to travel to places in your mind where you would never be able to go physically. Reading feeds your imagination. Reading helps you grow as a human being to understand the world around you. Reading increases your vocabulary. Reading teaches ...
